Insider Casting Tips from Nick & Amy - Nick Hamon Casting
Hi everyone! It’s Uma and Max from Call Back Kids, and we’re back with our latest episode that you don’t want to miss. This week, we got to chat with the dynamic duo behind Nick Hamon Casting, Nick and Amy. They’ve worked on incredible TV series like How to Stay Married and I Love you Too, as well as big-name commercials for Maltesers and Target!
What’s even cooler? They were the ones who cast Planet Lulin, the show we’re part of! We got to ask them all the juicy questions about what it’s really like to work behind the scenes in casting. Let’s share some amazing tips and insights from this inspiring chat.
How They Got Started
Nick admits he "fell into casting by accident," working his way up to starting his own company. “There’s no course to learn to be a casting director,” Nick explained. “It’s like an apprenticeship—you learn on the job, and it takes years to build the knowledge.”
Amy, on the other hand, came from a performance background as a dancer. “I loved being part of auditions—whether it was musical theatre or commercials. That’s when I knew I wanted to be on this side of the table.” She began as a dance agent and transitioned into casting 14 years ago.
Tips for Young Actors
Nick and Amy shared so many valuable tips for aspiring actors like us. Here are our top takeaways:
1. Show Your True Personality
Casting directors love when actors let their true selves shine through. Be confident and authentic—it’s not just about the script; it’s about how you bring it to life. If they can see who you are beyond the lines, you’ve already made a great impression!
“We love when young actors come in as themselves,” Amy said. “Don’t try to be overly polished or put on a show—it’s about being authentic.”
2. Preparation is the key
One of the biggest takeaways? Know your material. Spend time understanding the script, your character, and the story. Practice until it feels natural, but don’t stress about being perfect—they’re looking for potential, not perfection.
According to Nick, listening is one of the most important skills for an actor. “Whether it’s to your scene partner or the director’s feedback, being present in the moment makes all the difference.”
3. Take Direction Well & Listen Carefully
During auditions, casting directors might ask you to perform a scene differently. This isn’t a bad thing! It’s their way of seeing how flexible and coachable you are. So, stay calm, listen carefully, and try to incorporate their feedback.
Sometimes, we’ll ask you to try a scene in a completely different way,” Amy added. “It’s not about doing it perfectly—it’s about showing that you’re flexible and open-minded.”

4. Self-Tape Like a Pro
Self-taped auditions are super common these days. Here’s what they recommend:
· Use good lighting and a clean background.
· Ensure your audio is clear.
· Frame yourself from the chest up.
And most importantly, double-check everything before hitting send!
What Stands Out in an Audition?
When we asked what makes an actor memorable, Nick shared:
“Trust your gut instincts. The best auditions are the ones where actors bring something unexpected to the role. Maybe they laugh where others cry—it’s all about what feels right to you.”
Amy agreed, adding, “We remember the bold choices, even if they don’t land you the role. Directors will call you back for future projects if you show creativity and thoughtfulness.”
The Secret to Confidence
Feeling nervous? Nick had this to say: “Always remember—you’re in the room because we believe in you. We’ve seen something in you that fits the role, so trust in that and just play.”
Amy shared her love for seeing young actors grow: “It’s so rewarding watching shy kids come in and absolutely own a scene. Confidence builds over time, so don’t be afraid to take risks and have fun.”
Fun and Games!
At the end of our interview, we played a quick game where Nick and Amy had to name objects, animals, and celebrities starting with specific letters, T & L. Let’s just say... Amy won by a landslide especially with her double point answer of Tina Turner (Sorry, Nick!)
We learned so much from Nick and Amy about the casting process, and we hope you did too! Their advice is invaluable for anyone looking to break into acting.
